How does Mark Haddon use the first person narration in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time? Essay

In the words of Christopher Boone ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night – time’ is a ‘’murder mystery novel’’. This book takes you on a surprisingly effective journey through the world of 15 year old Christopher suffering from Asperger’s syndrome; a boy who turns to mathematics for comfort, who cannot eat foods if they are touching on his plate, and who judges the potential success of his day by the number of similarly coloured cars that pass him on the way to school. The story of the murder of Mrs Shears’s dog is told from Christopher’s perspective. Author, Mark Haddon’s use of the first person narrative is effective in the way in which it enables us to enter Christopher’s mind, it equally creates problems for the reader†¦ Throughout the novel, it becomes clear for us that Christopher finds it difficult to portray emotion or vice versa to read other people’s emotions. The fact that Christopher has Asperger’s syndrome adds to his inability to relate to how other people feel. As a result of this Christopher sees life in a very logical way and tends to describe things in lots of detail. This lack of understanding is highlighted during the novel. Initially the way Christopher fails to understand Mrs Shears’s anger and horror at the discovery of her dog, and later his lack of understanding for his father’s unhappiness and regret. ‘’There was a policeman and a policewoman. The policewoman had a little hole in her tights on her left ankle and a red scratch in the middle of the hole.’’ This quote shows Christopher’s logic and understanding and how he failed to realise that the policewoman had been hurt. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a murder mystery novel. Christopher tells us how he does not ‘’like proper novels.’’ The first person narration is good for the reader because it’s as if you are travelling with Christopher on a journey and you are there with him all the time in the book. As a reader you feel this way because in the book the ‘major’ events unfold to you and Christopher at the same time so as a character Christopher is facing new experiences, whilst you the reader are getting a shock. The reader and Christopher are both kept in the dark for the same amount of time until the truth gets revealed. ‘’Then I stopped reading the letter because I felt sick. Mother had not had a heart attack. Mother had not died. Mother had been alive all the time.’’ This quote shows the time when Christopher finds out that his mother had not been dead, and in fact alive. His reaction to this is not e xactly ‘vivid’ however as a reader you could imagine in your head that moment and picture his facial expressions. Mark Haddon’s use of the first person narrator makes the story seem more realistic as it lets the reader get an insight into not just Christopher’s but most of the character’s emotions. Even though Christopher himself doesn’t tend to show much emotion you can still paint an image in your head of what he is feeling, this is because of the way he narrates. The small yet detail he gives you along the story is beneficial as it enables you to become close to Christopher and understand him as a character. The details he notices of other people tend to be their body language; this information helps the reader to understand how other characters feel. Christopher finds it hard to read emotions and gets confused when he can’t think properly, as a reader you can relate to his frustration because of the way he responds to people and their actions. ‘’What else did I say Christopher? I thought that this might be a rhetorical question, but I wasn†™t sure. I found it hard to work out what to say because I was starting to get scared and confused.’’ The downside to Mark Haddon’s use of first person narration is that the reader cannot fully experience what other people are feeling. The reader is restricted to mainly Christopher’s feelings and emotions as the book is written from his perspective. The fact that it is written from Christopher’s point of view means that everything we find out has already been processed through Christopher as he is the narrator. The disadvantage of this is that because Christopher has Asperger’s syndrome, it is harder for him to understand things like jokes and metaphors. ‘’ This will not be a funny book. I cannot tell jokes because I do not understand them.’’ This could be bad for the reader because Christopher is a very literal person so it is hard for him to add humour into the book and for that reason readers may not enjoy the fact it is written in first person. Christopher tends to focus on other small details which seem relevant to him but as readers you feel as if sometimes it is just completely off topic. Another reason why Mark Haddon’s use of first person narration is not suitable is that, when Christopher narrates he tends to digress alot. When he talks he sticks to the topic however moments later he is narrating about another topic. ‘’Marilyn vos Savant said that you should always change and pick the final door because the chances are 2 in 3 that there will be a car behind the door.’’ This quote was taken from a chapter which started off by Christopher talking about why he liked maths and how his teacher said that Christopher liked maths ‘’because it was safe.’’ The chapter ended with a tree diagram showing outcomes of a game show, where the topic started, and where it ended were in two quite different places! In conclusion, I think that Mark Haddon has successfully written this book in first person although if the book was written in third person we would gather more information from all characters and their feelings, alternatively, as it is written in first person, Mark Haddon tells Christopher’s story with warmth and humour which makes us see Christopher’s problems at the same time that we experience everyone else’s frustrations in dealing with him. By having Christopher as a narrator it allows you to enjoy those situations that may happen in real life. The suspense that builds up throughout the story is great as it keeps you on the edge of your seat as you don’t know what is going to happen next! I personally enjoyed reading this book from Christopher’s point of view as it lets you imagine how people deal with Asperger’s syndrome as well as how they act with the syndrome. The first person narration is effective because I think it made the book seem more realistic because in reality that is probably what would happen, if you were to go onto a train for the first time alone then you would most likely be scared.†Then the train wobbled a lot and I had to hang onto a rail and we went into a tunnel and it was noisy and I closed my eyes and I could feel the blood pumping in the sides of my neck.’’ I think the way in which the author has captured Christopher’s emotion and feelings is unique because as a reader I first thought It was boring to be reading a book from his point of view, however as the story went on I realised that it is quite fascinating to be reading from someone who has Asperger’s syndrome. Overall I thought this book was quite extraordinary and the first person narration was used quite effectively.

Gone with the wind Essay

1.Give a summary of the book. Include the plot, the rising conflict and its climax and so on. 2.Give the character that you identify most? Why? 3.What is the setting of the story and how does it affect the story? What would happen if the story was set in another time or setting? 4.What are the major conflicts in this story? How would have Jesus reacted to one of the conflicts in the story? Gone With the Wind Gone with the wind is one of best novel I have ever read. It is also the greatest love story ever written. It is set during the American civil war (1861) in which the Southern states (the Confederacy) tried to free themselves from the northern states. The main character of this story was the beautiful Scarlett O’Hara. Her father, Gerald O’Hara was an old Irishman who owned a big cotton plantation named Tara. He also owned tens of slaves who worked for him. Scarlett’s mother was Ellen O’Hara and she was one of the kindest and most respected ladies in the county. All her life, Scarlett O’Hara wanted to be like her mother Ellen. The main O’Haras neighbors included the Wilkeses, the Tarletons, and the Calverts. As she was the most beautiful girl in the whole county, she had many beaux compared to any girl in the county. Almost all the boys were in the county were in love with her. But the Tarleton twins, Brent and Stuart, whom Scarlett liked hanging out with were twice madly in love with her compared to any other boys. But the problem was that Scarlett didn’t love them. She  was madly in love with Ashley Wilkes, her neighbor. She believed that Ashley Wilkes and her were meant to be together and neither the coming civil war nor the Tarleton twins were going to change that. But then, Scarlett learnt from the twins that the love of her life Ashley was going to marry his cousin Melanie Hamilton. She could hardly believe this and depression suddenly took the better part of her. Luckily, the Wilkeses organized a barbecue in which they were going to announce Ashley Wilkes engagement to his cousin. Scarlett planned to tell Ashley that she loved him and he would propose to her and forget about his cousin Melanie. and then maybe they would elope. But at the Wilkes’ barbecue, her plan didn’t succeed. Ashley told her that he loved his cousin Melanie because they were alike blood wise and they were alike in many other ways. Now, since they didn’t want to be heard by others as they were having their secret talk they decided to do it in the library. Unfortunately after they had finished their talk and Ashley had left the library, Scarlett started crying. Then from the back of the library, a man appeared, with an evil smile on his face. Scarlett knew that he had been listening to their conversation. His name was Rhett Butler and Scarlett told him that he was no gentleman and she was surprised to hear that she was no lady. To make Ashley Wilkes feel jealous, Scarlett married the timid and shy Charles Hamilton who was Melanie brother. Every boy who was in love with Scarlett was furious and even the Tarletons twins swore to kill Charles. Then the war started, and before all the men went to the war, Scarlett married Charles and Melanie married Ashley on the same wedding and day. Within two weeks of her marriage, Scarlett was already a widow as Charles Hamilton died in the war due pneumonia. But this didn’t worry Scarlett as she didn’t love Charles. But she was sad as Ashley had married another chick and he had gone with her. So everybody confused this, and thought that she was mourning for her husband’s death Charles. Scarlett left her home Tara to Atlanta as her parents thought that a change  of scene would reduce her stress and depression. She was happy because she moving to the Hamilton house where Melanie used to live and also, the half of the house was hers. Through Melanie maybe she would learn how Ashley was doing through the mail he sent to her. For a second time, Scarlett met Rhett Butler who was by now a blockader, as the Yankees were not allowing the Confederates to trade with other countries with nations through the Eastern United States port search New York. Gone with the wind, is a rather big book and hence hard to summarize, but this is what happened next briefly. The Yankees took over Atlanta and Scarlett had to go back to Tara. Then after the Yankees had taken over the south, the former confederate had to pay high taxes for their homes. Scarlett didn’t want to lose Tara she didn’t have the money to pay the taxes. To get the money, she married Frank Kennedy, her sister beau and got the money. But then, Frank died in KKK and Scarlett was left a widow again. Scarlett was tired of waiting for Ashley’s love, so she married Rhett Butler who loved her so much although he didn’t tell her. But she didn’t love him. Then, Melanie Wilkes, died during childbirth and Scarlett thought that she had a shot her love Ashley. She was surprised to know that Ashley didn’t love her but only loved his wife Melanie who now dead. She was so sad and it didn’t take her long to figure out that the only person who ever loved her was Rhett Butler. But when she went to him, she was surprised to know that he was tired of waiting for her love and also he had just lost his beloved daughter Bonnie whom he had substituted with Scarlett as the most important thing in his heart. So there was Scarlett. All life she had loved a man whom didn’t love her. She had loved Ashley Wilkes, and thrice she destroyed her marriages for his sakes, all in the name of love. A love that didn’t exist, a love that she created herself and never got t enjoy her creation not even a bit, what a waste it was. Margaret Mitchel was a genius author and I was so sorry when I read gone with the wind for the second time, I will never be able to read it for as the second time, only a third, maybe. 2. Gone with the wind is rather a large and complex book with different character that is worth identifying and naming. But the main characters that I mostly identify are Scarlett O’Hara the beautiful, cunning, crafty and the farsighted, Rhett Butler the arrogant and the wealthy. Also Melanie and Ashley were wildly mentioned in the story but not as much as Scarlett and Rhett Butler . 2b. I identify most with Scarlett O’ Hara and Rhett Butler as they have something I believe I have. Both Scarlett are hard workers. They both make ends meet to achieve what they want. Also to, they both don’t cares, which I find fascinating, because sometimes, I feel like the biggest don’t care in the world. You might not understand what I am talking about, here is a look of both the characters from the book. vScarlett O’Hara: ‘you miss, are no lady) said Rhett Butler to Scarlett. (Pg. 122) ‘I am a monster of selfishness’ said Scarlett O’Hara. (Pg. 584). She is the main character overall. Almost every beau in the county is in love with her at the beginning and every girl hate her for that Although she is madly in love with Ashley Wilkes who doesn’t really lover her, she marries Charles Hamilton just to make Ashley Wilkes feel jealous. She then becomes a widow within two weeks after Charles is killed in the war (pg129). Being a widow doesn’t mean she a mourner because she didn’t really love Charles. All she cares about is the love of her life Ashley Wilkes. Scarlett faces major difficulties when the Yankees make their way to Atlanta and she has to escape back to her farm Tara. With only one horse, and a mechanically bogus carriage and three children, sick Melanie and herself, she travels ten of miles until she riches Tara. (pg. 383) at Tara she finds that her heroic mother figure is dead and her father has gone crazy. Other struggles of Scarlett include when the Yankees tries to kick her family out of Tara due to unpaid tax and she had to leave for Atlanta to look for money from the rich Rhett Butler only to find that he is in prison. She secretly schemes to cheat and marry her sister Suellen beaux, Frank Kennedy, so that she can get the tax money from him. She succeeds and becomes Mrs. Kennedy. She really bullies Frank Kennedy and make him look less than man especially when she buy and starts managing the sawmills. Fortunately for her, Frank is shot  during a KKK meeting. After being widow for a while, she marries Rhett Butler who loved her so much and gave anything that he wanted. But the only problem is, she couldn’t love him because she was still in love with Ashley Wilkes. By the time she realizes Ashley couldn’t love her, and that she was in love with Rhett Butler, it was too late because Rhett was tired of waiting for her love and he had just lost his most favorite daughter. Her favorite phrase was ‘God Nightgown’ vRhett Butler: ‘You are no gentleman† said Scarlett to Rhett. (pg.122). Nobody including his family could receive Rhett Butler to their homes before the civil war. He was an outcast in his hometown Charleston because he disgraced a girl and refused to marry. But the thing was, Rhett Butler didn’t care what other thought of him. Other people’s opinion didn’t move him. When he saw Scarlett at the Wilkes’ barbecue, he instantly fell in love with her and told himself the day he was going to marry her it would be his lucky day. During the civil war, the Yankees did not allow the Confederacy to trade with the Europeans or any other part of the world through the port of New York City. It was know as the famous Blockade. Then Rhett Butler a wise and corrupted man; made a pact with the Yankees, in that they would sell him goods of all kind. He then go to the confederate, tell them how hard it was to run the blockade, which he actually didn’t and sell his goods to them at double price. The somehow people found out it. 3. Gone with the wind would not have been such a big success if it weren’t set during the American civil war. Don’t get me wrong here. I am not trying to imply that the book is a historical record of the civil war. It is a love story. At the before the civil war, we meet Stuart and Brent Tarleton who are both madly in love with Scarlett and who believe that one of them is going to marry her (pg. 4). We also meet Ashley Wilkes who is planning to marry his cousin Melanie Wilkes. The O’Hara sisters, Suellen who is in love with Frank Kennedy, Careen who is in love with Brent Tarleton who by the way is in love with Scarlett. There many other young people that I will not mention who had sweet hearts and were planning to get married. Then came the news that the war was going to start with a few days and that all the young men available were to leave and join the army. This meant the young  sweethearts were either to get married before the men left for the war or there could wait until the war was over. Well some couple got married other decided to wait. The example I have in mind is when Scarlett O’Hara married Charles Hamilton but when Charles left for the war, he died within less than two weeks. (Pg. 129) If Charles happened to live, then we would have no story because Scarlett wouldn’t have the freedom to marry other men, which she did and made the story deserve to be read at a sitting. The setting made the story more real, entertaining and worth reading. It was a love story because young girls got to lose their sweethearts in the war and then the author would show us how they got to survive, get other lovers and so on. if the story was set on other setting such as the modern times, let say the year 2003 instead of 1861-5, it wouldn’t be such a successful love story because nothing of much significant has happened that affects young sweethearts apart from STDs which don’t mostly affect true and faithful lovers. If the story were set maybe in the middle ages or the renaissance, it would have been quite a boring book to read. Most people don’t want to read how the plague affected young lovers, and there wasn’t romantic love didn’t exists as wildly as it did in the 19th century. But on the other it would be a more interesting love story if it was set during the time of chivalry and brave knights and so on. Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe was a huge success as a romantic story and so was the Alexander Dumas’s The three Musketeer set during 1665 during the reign of Louis the just or the 8th. But none can, or is near the Margaret Mitchel Gone with the wind! What a pity. 4. This is a huge book with almost tens of conflicts and I shall try to get the major conflicts. vThey is an inner conflict between the Tarletons twins, as they are both deeply in love with Scarlett, but they are not sure among them whom she is going to choose among them, then they are surprised out of their wits when she chooses the timid and shy Charles Hamilton vThere is a general conflict between the union and the Confederacy as the Union refuses to recognize it as a free state. This leads to the civil war, which is the general setting of the great novel. vAshley has an inner conflict whether he loves Scarlett or not which leads to the biggest conflict in the book which is: vThere are other smaller conflicts, which I would take hours and tens of pages to name and analyze, so I will just, move to the major conflict. vScarlett is madly in love with Ashley Wilkes who finds it difficult to make it clear to her that he is only in love with his cousin Melanie and is only attracted to Scarlett because of her beauty (pg.118). This end up causing much problem to Scarlett because she end up marrying men she didn’t love. Married Frank Kennedy just to save Tara form being taken away by the Yankees because of the taxes, where by the way Ashley and his family were taking refuge. She also marries Rhett Butler whom she didn’t love because she was tired of waiting for Ashley’s love. And then, Ashley’s wife Melanie dies during childbirth and Scarlett know that she has her chance to marry love of her life, but she gets the surprise of her lifetime, v†Ã¢â‚¬ËœWhat you have gone through†¦Oh Ashley, you should have known, years ago, that you loved her and not me! Why didn’t you! Everything would have been so different, so-Oh you should have and not kept me dangling with all your talk about honor and sacrifice! If you told me long me, years ago, I’d have–It would have killed me but I would have it somehow. But you wait till now, till Melly dying, to find it out and now it is too late to do anything†¦You should have seen so clearly that you wanted me like–like Rhett that Watling woman!'† said Scarlett to Ashley (pg.1002) vJesus Reaction!–Throughout the book, we see that Scarlett is driven to do most of the thing she does because of the love she has for Ashley. She marries Charles to make Ashley feel jealous, she marries Frank Kennedy to save Tara where Ashley was residing. She even makes him a manager of one of her mills so that she can stay closer to him. Ashley on the other is attracted physically to Scarlett but he isn’t sure whether he she for her. Both of this people are married. What they did, according to Jesus, they Committed Adultery! Matthew 5:27-29 says (Jesus) ‘but now I tell you: anyone  who looks at a woman and wants to posses to her is guilty of committing adultery with her in his heart!’ So, both Scarlett and Ashley committed adultery and according to Jesus, Matthew 5:29-30 ‘so if you right eye causes you to sin, take it out and throw it away!†¦It is better than you to lose apart of your body than to go to hell!’ How I get is, Jesus would have advised to stop what they, to tell to show them that they were committing sins in the eyes of our God the creator. He then would have given time to redeem himself and if it didn’t work, he would declare them sinners and St. Paul said that the reward of sins is death! And so did Jesus, but he wouldn’t be that harsh, he is and was Jesus Christ!

Influence of Culture on Accounting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Influence of Culture on Accounting - Essay Example Uniform implementation of International Accounting Standards is taking a long time mainly for this reason. The concerns and constraints of each country are different and most of the countries have well developed accounting norms and standards which they feel are quite adequate for their needs. It is another story that a reader from an alien culture might find the accounts presentation style too elaborate or too brief Dieter Ordelheide (2004 p.269) states that accounting is a social institution. He further states that Accounting is concerned with nothing less than the conceptualization of capital, its concrete expression in numbers, as well as its budgeting and monitoring, and thus with a societal institution that is so central to our economic system that it has given it its name. We might talk of global and market driven economies, the ways and means of determining the income or assets are the core of the entire financial and economic set up. Each cultural group uses these to tray and better their financial position within the culture they belong to. "Professionalism versus Statutory Control-a preference for the exercise of individual professional judgment and the maintenance of professional self-regulation as opposed to compliance with prescriptive level requirements and statutory control. Uniformity versus Flexibility-a preference for the enforcement of uniform accounting practices between companies and for the consistent use of such practices over time as opposed to flexibility in accordance with the perceived circumstances of individual companies. Conservatism versus Optimism-a preference for a cautious approach to measurement so as to cope with the uncertainty of future events as opposed to a more optimistic, laissez-faire, risk-taking approach. Secrecy versus Transparency-a preference for confidentiality and the restriction of disclosure of information about the business only to those who are closely involved with its management and financing as opposed to a more transparent, open, and publicly accountable approach." Thus as per this hypothesis each of these conflicting factors have influenced the development of the accounting standards depending upon their prevalence and dominance in the cultures being referred to. To take the example of Greek economy where the businesses tend to be closely held and public participation is indirect at its best mainly in the form of lending by banks, the need for disclosure or window dressing balance sheets is negligent. So the accounting systems which developed were fairly simple such that the limited number of stakeholders can understand the basic numbers. Of course with integration within the EU the disclosure norms have become more complex still not as complex at other developed countries say USA or Canada. In Greece one suspects that the tax bureaucrats have had a strong hand in dictating the shape of accounting conventions which are still followed. The Greek business houses being closely held tend to be wary of disclosing information to competitors so it is uncommon to see segment

Critical Literature Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Critical - Literature review Example But one thing which certainly can be implemented is innovation in governance, the way of operating of its public sector organizations. This review critically examines cases of innovation in governance style and differentiates them from private sector product and process innovation. Critical Review Lot has been written on private sector innovations of products and processes but not much on public sector innovation. Governance innovations in public sector require and deserve greater attention as they go beyond the organizational boundaries to involve other public/private sector organizations, leads to a network based decision making leading to a more efficient implementations and tap new pools of resources among existing resources (Moore and Hartley, 2008). The focus of their paper is on how public sector innovation is different from private innovation in two distinct ways of the latter being very narrow and specific and two the changes are far more concentrated than general as compare d to public sector. They focus on how public sector innovation is much more macro than private sector involving a change in thinking patters of management, change in complex social systems and its restructuring, financial changes, process changes and end result is a changed social delivery. Since these are changes in the existing way of operating and managing, they are tangentially different than inventions (Bessant 2003). Moore and Hartley (2008, p. 4) quotes Lynn (1997) that: ‘Innovation must not simply be another name for change, or for improvement, or even for doing something new lest almost anything qualify as innovation. Innovation is properly defined as an original, disruptive, and fundamental transformation of an organization’s core tasks’. Today many public sector organizations are leading their way in redefining the reason for their existence. There is enough criticism which is found in literature which states that only process level innovation in publi c sector will not lead to any significant change in society and it is unlikely for one best practice to exist for all public sector organizations (Habday, 2005). Savory (2009, p. 150) writes about building knowledge translation capability into public sector innovation process and its special application to National Health Service (NHS) of the UK. this organization thrives on innovation in public health sector in all respects of technology, service and service delivery. This is possible due to two different modes of innovation which is practice based and research based. Both are effective in their own respect, but needs a lot of support from the structure of the organization, policy making and financial resource allocation for the process of real innovation take place. Power lobbies in health care sector and interests of various stake holders also effect the innovation process in NHS, which means that any worthy change to occur at ground level, a network wide change has to occur whic h reemphasizes the importance of Innovation in Governance. NHS modernization agency was proposed in 2000 for promoting change management the way it’s done in private sector. unlike private sector, change management was divided in two parts, innovation of services and innovation of technology. Though this paper emphasize that similar capacity management can be applied at in similar way for

Health Gap between Rich and Poor in Briatin Essay

Health Gap between Rich and Poor in Briatin - Essay Example There were a lot of repressed meanings that could possibly be interpreted in these news writings. As a result, this essay would present the point of view on the issue through the evaluation of the three online news sources via using a deconstructive approach. I would first discuss my point of view with regards to the online news article published by BBC Online (1998). Upon reading BBC’s news report, I could say that it was really written in a conservative approach with the aim of not only providing information to the public but largely on persuading the citizens of UK, in particular, the poor sectors of the society, that the government could resolve this widening health gap. This media group’s manner of reporting was done through informing the public on what the government was thinking about the health issue. In fact, as stated by the author of the report who was a government’s former chief medical officer, Sir Donald Acheson, the local authorities had already me chanisms to resolve the challenges encountered by the most economically deprived sector of society. As part of the government, he greatly had voiced how the government were seriously considering the said health issue because of its significant impact on the succeeding generations. In fact, the seventy – five (75) recommendations given in the report was far – reaching as it had included thirty – nine (39) categories which consisted of health all the other areas related it like education, housing and environment. Though, it was only the voice of the government that was clearly expressed. Through taking into consideration the source of the news report, the BBC, a non – commercial, government - owned organization, it could be greatly understood the careful manner of reporting since it was being funded and supported by the government itself. As part of the local authority, this medium was serving a purpose of not only providing the information to the public bu t also, for the large part, it had played to protect the government. It was biased in the sense that the voice of the government was the only voice that was presented. Thus, this article of BBC had suppressed the other possible interpretations of this issue through not presenting the other sides of the problem. Given the serious health concerns encountered by the authorities, BBC had functioned as a mechanism of the government to give assurance to its people that everything was manageable and under control, that the growing health gap between the rich and the poor sectors of society would soon be resolved. In this manner, the public should worry about nothing because the government was doing its role. Indeed, BBC’s manner of providing information to the public was serving the benefit of its sponsor, the government. On the

GLL - Essay Example The fund can be utilised in the following sectors for building the swim centre: Hiring of Pool Contractor The foremost task is to hire a pool contractor to get the best economical value for the pool design. 1% of the total funding will be spend to appoint an appropriate contractor for the project, who will help in choosing the most economical pool structure for the ladies in Tower Hamlets. Cost to the Contractor The contractor takes the entire responsibility of constructing the swimming pool and charges a specific amount for that. 50% of the total funding can be kept aside for allocating the job to a contractor. The objective is to get the best value for investment and thus 2% has been allocated for contractor selection. Allocation of job to contractor lifts the hazards of the complex task and can provide adequate time for utilisation in other activities. Extra Features Certain amount of funding should be allocated for creating an â€Å"X factor† in the swim centre. ... Equipments such as swimming pool furniture, pool thermometers, centrifugal motor pump and hose pipe are the most basic ones. An allocation of 19% of the total funding has to be made for purchasing these equipments in the initial stage. Lighting and Heating The lighting and heating amenities need to be designed in a well structured manner in order to avoid any disaster in the future. Women prioritise safety and security the most. Thus, maintenance of highest quality lighting and heating facilities will attract and encourage women to join the centre. 5% of the fund needs to be allocated for this purpose. Promoting The centre will remain a gravestone as long as it is not being promoted. Thus, a lot of emphasis needs to be provided to the marketing aspect of the project. The remaining 15% of the fund should be utilised in promoting the swim centre within the locality of Tower Hamlets. All the facilities that will be specially designed for a ladies swim centre should be promoted. Operatin g Costs The amount of funding in maintaining the operating expenses would be derived from the operating incomes after the project gets started. However, it is essential to keep in mind that sufficient amount of fund should be utilised in maintenance and cleanliness of the swim centre. Adequate and appropriate chemicals should be used for keeping the swimming pool clean and unsullied everyday. Maintenance is extremely important for providing the best look to the swim centre around the locality. For example, vinyl and concrete linings should be refreshed once in every 5 years. A continuous checking and verifying are necessary for a swim centre to be successful in encouraging people to join (HomeHelp4U, 2011). Summary of the Above

This is because this is a highly competitive field and great focus on emerging technologies and research work is required to gain a competitive edge over other players in the field. I discovered that to become a fellow of AIMBE which is a US association reserved only for the top 2% of the best biomedical engineers, one should get fiercely engaged in research activities involving areas of biological and pharmaceutical systems. The top three qualities of a professional in the field with which Dr. Putnam is associated refer to a deep understanding of engineering design principles, production of functional biomaterials, and design of those biomaterials. When I asked Dr. Putnam about how I can make myself a more competitive or desirable applicant in any job area related to biomedical engineering, he wisely tol d me that I should develop keen interest in research work and remain prepared to conduct a series of experiments to fulfil that purpose which demands a lot of

Probability Distributions - Assignment Example Burglary topped the list of the most committed crime with 44%. On satisfaction, the criminal justice ranked first with 5.4 points while sentencing closed the list with 5.0 points. Correctional facilities play an integral role in criminal justice system. These facilities key responsibility is the incapacitation of a convicted person to deter recurrence of crime. They do so through the execution of the punishment given to a convicted offender by the court. However, they also provide other services such as rehabilitation and skill training. In US, the facilities fall under state or federal government although, private prisons also exists. The Federal Bureau of Prisons manages all the federal prisons while the Correction Departments in various states runs the state prisons. An offender gets an admission to prison after sentencing by a judge in state or federal courts. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) 2011, there were about 1.5 million prisoners in both state and federal prisons. Of this population, 40% were above 40 years old. The drug related offenders accounted for close to half the population of inmates in federal courts. Besides, the person s aged between 20 to 44 years committed most crimes accounting for 78% of the prisons’ population. In the same report prepared by BJS, approximately 92% of the prisoners are males. On crimes, apart from drugs, robbery, murder, assault, and burglary are the most common crimes in US. Although, the BJS 2011 statistics showed that the population of US prisoners declined by 0.9%, the incarceration rates outnumbers countries such as Canada and United Kingdom. Therefore, the conclusion is that the criminal justice system has weaknesses that need address from stakeholders. One of the main challenges faced by the system is the disproportionate number of African American and Hispanics in US prisons. While they are the minorities, they make up about 70% of the prisoners. This disparity elicits a perception that

Management Information Systems Essay Information Systems Failure: The Case of Computer-Aided Dispatch (Cad) System at London Ambulance Service 1. Introduction The LAS covers a geographical area of just over 600 square miles and handles emergencies for a resident population of 6.8 million people. The CAD project is one of the most frequently quoted UK-based examples of information systems failure that took place in early 1990s. The prominence of this particular case is due to the ‘safety critical’ nature of this system and the claim that 20-30 people may have lost their lives as a result of CAD failure. 2. Description of the Manual Dispatch System The manual dispatch system consists of: a) call taking, b) resource identification, and c) resource mobilization. Call Taking: Emergency calls are received by ambulance control. Control assistants write down details of incidents on pre-printed forms. The location of each incident is identified and the reference co-ordinates are recorded on the forms. The forms are then placed on a conveyer belt which transports them to a central collection point. Resource Identification: Other members of ambulance control collect the forms, review the details on the forms and decide which resource allocator should deal with each incident. The resource allocator examines the forms for a particular sector, compares the details against information recorded for each vehicle and decides which resource should be mobilized. The status information on these forms is updated regularly from information received via the radio operator. The resource is recorded on the original form which is then passed on to a dispatcher. Resource mobilization: The dispatcher either telephones the nearest ambulance station or passes instructions to the radio operator if an ambulance is already mobile. A number of problems exist with the manual dispatch system. Most problems are related to the time-consuming and error-prone nature of activities such as: identification of the precise location of an incident, the physical movement of paper forms, and maintaining up-to-date vehicle status information. Therefore, a Computer- Aided Dispatch (CAD) system was considered as a solution to overcome these problems. 3. The Computer-Aided Dispatch System 3.1 Purpose The objective of the CAD system was to automate many of the human-intensive processes involved in the manual despatch system. 3.2 How the CAD system was intended to work The essential features of the CAD system are shown in Figure 1 which illustrates how the system was intended to work in practice. British Telecom (BT) operators would route all 999 calls concerning medical emergencies to LAS headquarters. A total of 18 ‘receivers’ were then expected to record on the system the name, telephone number and address of the caller, and the name, destination address and brief details of the patient. This information would then be transmitted over a LAN to an ‘allocator’. The system would pinpoint the patient’s location on a map. The system was also expected to monitor continuously the location of every ambulance via radio messages transmitted by each vehicle. The system would then determine the nearest ambulance to the patient. Figure 1: The structure of CAD system at LAS Experienced ambulance ‘dispatchers’ were organized into teams based on three zones (south, north-east, and north-west). Dispatchers would be offered details of the three nearest ambulances by the system and the estimated time each would need to reach the scene. The dispatcher would choose an ambulance and send patient details to a small terminal screen located on the dashboard of the ambulance. The ambulance crew would then be expected to confirm that it was on its way. If the selected ambulance was in an ambulance depot then the dispatch message would be received on the station computer. The ambulance crew would always be expected to acknowledge a message. The system would automatically alter HQ of any ambulance where no acknowledgement was made. A follow-up message would then be sent from HQ. The system would detect messages that would tell HQ when the ambulance crew had arrived, when it was on its way to a hospital and when it was free again. 3.3 How the CAD system was built The CAD system was built as an event-based system using a rule-based approach and was intended to interact with a geographical information system (GIS). The system was built by a small software house called Systems Options using their own GIS software (WINGS) running under Microsoft Windows. The GIS communicated with Datatrak’s automatic vehicle tracking system. The system ran on a series of network PCs and file servers supplied by Apricot. 4. Events that Identified the Flaws of the CAD System On the night of the 26th October 1992 (Monday), things started to go wrong at the HQ of LAS. A flood of 999 calls apparently swamped operators’ screens and many of those calls were being wiped off screens for unknown reasons. Claims were later made that 20 to 30 people may have died as a result of ambulance arriving late on the scene. Some ambulances took over three hours to answer a call while the government’s recommended maximum was 17 min utes. Mr. John Wilby, the chief executive officer of LAS resigned within a couple of days of this event. A number of Members of Parliament called for a public inquiry. The Health Secretary initiated an inquiry and the findings were eventually published in an 80-page report in February, 1993, which immediately became headline news in both the computing and the national press. 5. Findings of the Inquiry The inquiry found evidence of poor management practice, high technological complexities and unfavorable operating environment involved in the implementation of the CAD system in LAS. Systems Options, the company responsible for developing the major part of the CAD system had no previous experience of building similar type of systems. This company, which had won the  £1.1 million contract for the development of the CAD system in June 1991, was found to have substantially underbid an established supplier (McDonnellDouglas). Hence, Systems Options was under serious pressure to complete the system quickly. The managing director of a competing software house wrote various memoranda to LAS management in June and July 1991 describing the project as ‘totally and fatally flawed’. It appeared that Mr. Wilby ignored what amounted to an over-ambitious project timetable. Furthermore, an audit report by Anderson Consulting which called for more finance an d longer time scales for the CAD project was suppressed by the project managers. The board of management of LAS was even misled by the project team over the experience of Systems Options and the references supplied by Systems Options were not thoroughly investigated. Due to the extreme time pressure to develop the CAD system within the allocated timeframe, the project team responsible for developing the system practically did not follow any standard systems development approach. As a result, the resultant software was incomplete and unstable. In January 1992, phases one and two of the project began live trials. In March 1992, phase two of the trials was temporarily suspended due to the discovery of system errors. In October 1992, phase three was terminated after two days of reported chaos described above. Questions were raised about the complexity of the technical system. In the manual dispatch system, communication between HQ and ambulances is conducted via telephone or voice radio links. In the CAD system, links between communication, logging and dispatching vi a a GIS were meant to be automated. The automation was completed but no performance testing was thoroughly performed due to the rushed approach to meet the deadline. The system was lightly loaded at start-up on the 26th October, 1992. Any problems, caused by the communications systems (e.g. ambulance crews pressing wrong buttons, or ambulances being in radio black spots) could be effectively managed by staff. However, as the number of ambulance incidents increased, the amount of incorrect vehicle information recorded by the system also increased. This had a knock-on effect in that the system made incorrect allocations on the basis of the information that it had. For example, multiple vehicles were sent to the same incident, or the closet vehicle was not chosen for the dispatch. As a result, the system had fewer ambulance resources to allocate. At the receiving end, patients became frustrated with the delays to ambulances arriving at incidents. This led to an increase in the number of calls made back to the LAS HQ relating to already recorded incidents. The increased volume of calls, together with a slow system and an insufficient number of call-takers, contributed to significant delays in answering the telephones which, in turn, caused further delays to patients. At the ambulance end, crews became increasingly frustrated at incorrect allocations and this led to an increased number of instances where they failed to press the right status buttons. The system therefore appears to have been in a vicious circle of cause and effect. There was also an apparent mismatch of perspectives among LAS management, HQ staff, and ambulance staff. The system has been described as being introduced in an atmosphere of mistrust by staff. There was incomplete ownership of the system by the majority of LAS staff. The hardware and software suppliers involved in this project reported low staff morale and friction between LAS management and workforce. In other words, an atmosphere of hostility towards the computing systems was observed. One of the reasons for low staff morale was that control room staff lacked previous experience of using computer systems. 6. Conclusion In summary, no single element of the case can be regarded as the sole cause for the failure of the CAD system in LAS. The description demonstrates that failure of information systems projects tend to be multi-faceted in nature. Discuss Questions: a) Discuss the CAD system in terms of Interaction Failure. b) What lessons can be learned from the failure of the CAD project in LAS?

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Online Business Information Technology Essay

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Online Business Information Technology Essay Several decades ago nobody could have imagined that development of technologies would lead to radical changes in business management. Moreover, we did not even suppose that a usual process of buying and selling which was implemented through real communication between buyer and trader would become so convenient and accessible. Till some particular moment communication was the only way of holding negotiations we got accustomed to, which now is being gradually replaced by this new possibility to do business by using the Internet technologies. From year to year online business method that was intended only for privileged is becoming more and more demanded and available for everyone in the cyberspace. Electronic business has a significant impact on company performance and new ways of growth and improvement are opened for its subsequent prosperity. This improvement is achieved by changing the concept of operations and establishing closer relationship with customers. The economic basis of e lectronic business is radically expanding the audience, increasing marketing effectiveness, accelerating the process of buying and selling of all kinds of goods and services (Shelly Vermaat, 2009, p.737). We used to refer the phrase electronic shop (Shelly Vermaat, 2009, p.738) to a specialized website where web visitor is able to purchase any goods directly online and acquaints preliminarily with their descriptions. Customers process of buying in an electronic shop differs from the traditional form of purchasing items in usual shops. This trend of modern trade continues to grow and this is the reason why most companies are now actively converting conventional business models and are focused on multi-marketing strategy. Today, investment in electronic business is a priority for many of them. However, its solution is necessary for clear understanding of the key factors which determine the success. Although electronic business definitely has valuable advantages over other types of business, it has disadvantages which should not be overlooked. It cannot be denied that the main benefits of online business are its low start up cost and fast development in comparison with the common one. There is no need in renting a physical space as the cyberspace is infinite area to some extent and the seller can suggest a wide range of products. Therefore the clients have more extensive choice. The more things the customer has to choose the more satisfied he/she is. For the generation of online shops it does not require a lot of efforts and time to set it up. At the beginning of the business a websites developer should register the project and promote it through various advertising companies. All these costs do not require a lot of money expenditures while in conventional business it does. Thus, any business process, in which you can use the electronic interaction between people, has the potential for reducing expenditures, which, in turn, entails lower prices for customers (Fields, 2007). Another important advantage of online business is its capability to attract not only local customers but also a worldwide audience with minimal effort. Of course, it is possible to reach international public through other forms of advertising like traditional ones: television, radio and print media. But all together they are not as effective in reaching potential clients around the world as electronic marketing is. Basically, any product or service that is registered on the World Wide Web has a limitless market that transcends age, culture, geography and time zone (Campbell, 2007). No matter of wherever and whenever the clients are, it is not a problem now to get the things they want within the shortest period. At the same time, it unites people of all ages, races and occupations into one whole community of online buyers in some meaning. Having a discussion with each other on the forums, the clients from different countries exchange their knowledge about some kind of products and get both useful information and also an international experience of communication. Online business gives traders a possibility to earn money even if they sleep as their shops work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The important feature of the Internet is that it has automatic operating mode of websites and therefore the probability of missing clients is minimized in this situation because they can purchase goods at any time they want and what is of high importance is that sellers save a lot of their time. Thousands of people can surf website simultaneously without making a crowd while it is rarely happens in offline business. In addition, traders can spend enough time doing the things they like and working at the time they prefer. It is very convenient for them to manage daytime in this way as they can put the work aside whenever they like and get some rest or vice versa (Smith, 2005). A very strong side of starting online business is the fact that in the situation of business failure the businessperson does not lose his/her life savings. Usually the activity of electronic business has to be stopped because of the deficiency of profit and thereby the businessperson has to end his/her activity. The only thing the owner can lose is his/her money that were spent for the development and promotion of business. The risk of such failure can be much bigger if business was granted franchise. It means that all the efforts the seller put into activation of business, the list of his/her patrons and customers in common, a respectful position in the business sector, communication with persons of consequence, all these life benefits disappear in a moment. Electronic business has transformed its customer service into the convenient and effective one. Auspicious conditions were created for maintenance of confidential relationships between clients and traders. The customer can contact a commercial agent in an interactive mode to get more information about the product or service. Furthermore, the clients can read recommendations and reviews of different people within website who already have opinions about items that they want to buy or already purchased and used them. If some product the customer wants to buy is not available for the current time then it is possible to send a request to inform him/her about its appearance via e-mail. What is more convenient is that payments can be implemented online and the items can be delivered to the customers without their participation (Iyer, n.d.). Remember the situation in the shop when people have to go through different departments to find the items they need. It takes a lot of time and power and as a consequence the amenities of shopping disappear. Fortunately, online shops have a very smart option the possibility to search products in catalogues just by entering the keywords into search form. After several seconds the integrated search engine would find all the possible offers of goods. It is a very attractive option for people who do not like to waste a lot of time on selecting the products (Shelly Vermaat, 2009, p.745). The last advantage I want to pay attention is a lack of necessity in hiring personnel like software engineer to run online business. The basic thing to activate online store is to create and upload it to the Internet. Even if hire a professional programmer, it would be a kind of a temporary work which does not require permanent control. One way around this is to outsource as many of your business functions as possible (Kaarakainen, 2010). If later the shop owner could fulfill such things like monitoring of the website, observation of clients requests and some other stuff by himself/herself then there is no need in outsourcing anymore, maybe except the situations like technical problems when it is almost impossible to hold down a job without specialists help. Having considered the main benefits of online business it is important to pay attention to the drawbacks as they put obstacles in the way of taking the leading position of online business running. A use of electronic communications is becoming one of the key conditions for the survival of companies in a huge competitive environment however competition is also one of the most alarming problems. Because competition comes in all forms and shapes, your sales pitch would have to be truly attention-calling (Campbell, 2007). One of the necessities in the competitive activity is occasional price reduction when only the most stable business could survive. The customers often become victims of a warm work of competitive organizations and sometimes can find it difficult to make the right decision in choosing the right goods for themselves. So the only possible constructive tool in clients attraction could be the proper marketing strategy in the cruel wars of the business rivals. As online shops became accessible for all the visitors so the tendency of copying ideas which were put there is of high possibility. People tend to do these things following the main motivation of gaining as much profit as possible. In view of the fact that if ones online business is not officially registered as the trade mark then stealing the project of website construction is not taken as a copyright offence. So that means that everyone who would take the same concept of already existing website could live with no worry. It is a very grievous aspect of open business activity when all your marketing strategies are visible and clear (Kaarakainen, 2010). Another disadvantage that also should be observed is a security threat of supposed electronic transaction which customer usually accomplishes during the purchase. People are still worrying about security of electronic commerce in spite of the wide spread of modern software that helps to protect their personal information. Through the growing number of fraudulent schemes people in most cases are afraid of giving details of their account until they are sure about the reliability of the payment system. And such behavior is fully justified as no one would like to lose his/her money (Campbell, 2007). As all the talks of customer and trader are implemented via the Internet it is really hard to build a good and trusting relationships (Burton, 2008) between them because of their isolation from each other. Most of people find it almost impossible to negotiate in this way as they do not have any idea of who they are contacting with. Therefore, the seller should endeavor a lot to satisfy all the needs of the clients and try to keep positive and friendly relationships in order to attract as many new customers as possible for the further possible collaboration. In conclusion I would like to stress that all the mentioned advantages of online business are very strong and have conclusive proofs that maintaining business with the help of modern high technologies is optimized as much as possible and continues to develop day after day. For those who have never tried it, electronic business could be perceived as not serious occupation but this system really works. Just look at the real examples of such successful online companies like Amazon or eBay as they are the parts of the list of online giants with overwhelming profit made since their creation. Unfortunately, we should admit the fact that deficiencies hamper subsequent progress of online business techniques and traders have to cope with them. In the near future it seems to be the full dominance of high technologies in the commerce sector and its improvements would be interpreted as a fertile soil for the effectiveness of peoples saving time (Shelly Vermaat, 2009, p.751).

Payouts to smokers who are ill :: essays research papers

Are payouts to those made ill by smoking justified? Over recent years research has clearly demonstrated the harms of smoking, both in terms of reduced quality of life and death. We are now able to gauge more accurately the real health impacts of direct tobacco use and environmental tobacco smoke. Of all drugs, both legal and illegal, smoking is the biggest killer. The social and economic cost of tobacco use in Victoria is more than $3 billion per year and more than two thirds the total cost of all drugs. Thirteen Victorians die every day from causes associated with cigarette smoking. Good morning/afternoon Mrs Birt and class, On Thursday the 11th of April the Supreme court of Victoria awarded Melbourne grandmother Rolah Ann McCabe $700,000 in damages after she sued one of the world's leading tobacco companies. The Victorian Supreme Court found that Australia's biggest tobacco company destroyed thousands of internal documents to deliberately subvert court processes and to deny Melbourne lung cancer patient Rolah McCabe a fair trial. Standing on the steps of the Supreme Court after her victory over British American Tobacco, Rolah McCabe pleaded with teenagers and especially girls not to smoke. Mrs McCabe is the first Australian smoker to successfully sue an international tobacco company and recently announced a donation of $70,000 to the Cancer Council of Victoria. The question raised by this is issue is are payouts to those made ill by smoking justified? Many non-smokers would say that everyone has the choice whether to smoke or not and that it is a voluntary action to smoke. But the nicotine in cigarettes is just like any other drug and can be as hard to quit has heroin. To understand whether or not people like Rolah McCabe deserve compensation from Tobacco companies, people who make opinions on this issue must be informed of the relevant information about the tobacco industry and each individual persons history. Mrs McCabe was born in Gippsland and started smoking the Capstan brand of cigarettes in 1962 at the age of 12, according to her statement of claim. Within four years she was smoking between 20 and 30 cigarettes a day. She then changed to the Escort brand in 1966 and smoked until 1992. At this stage in time anti smoking legislation had not been implemented by the Australian government as the dangers and health risks of smoking were not known. In a time of ignorance Tobacco products such as cigarettes were legally advertised on T. Payouts to smokers who are ill :: essays research papers Are payouts to those made ill by smoking justified?

The Forlorn Loves in James Joyces novel, Ulysses Essay -- Joyce Ulyss

The Forlorn Loves in Joyce's novel, Ulysses Greek has words for four kinds of love: agape, or spiritual love; storge, or familial love; the love between friends, or philia; and sexual love, the familiar eros. All four figure in Joyce's novel Ulysses, yet all eventually evade the two male protagonists, Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom: Ulysses proves ultimately to be a love-less work.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Agape -- spiritual love, the charitable love among coreligionists or between Man and God -- seems sure to appear, given Ulysses' protagonists' backgrounds and the host of Christian symbols that flock about them. Yet Stephen Dedalus is torn with doubt in his Catholicism, and we find in the course of the novel that Bloom renounced his Judaism, first to convert to Protestantism with his father and then, conveniently, to convert to Catholicism to marry Molly: both have fallen from their original faith. Within two paragraphs of Ulysses' opening we see a mock Mass -- "Introibo ad altare Dei" (p. 3) -- and hear the lurking Stephen scornfully called a "fearful jesuit" by mocking Mulligan. Stephen is certainly no recipient of agape here! Interestingly, Simon Dedalus identifies Mulligan as Stephen's "fidus Achates" (p. 73), a glancing Virgil image to set Stephen up as "pius Aeneas", "pious Aeneas", Virgil's hero of proper behavior to gods and men. B ut, as we see, home-stealing, ever-jeering Mulligan is no more "fidus" than whoring, drunken Stephen is "pius".   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Stephen Dedalus is a prolix speaker, an engaging theorist and theologian, well versed in ecclesiastical history, particularly in the Church's early heresies. Yet, for all his knowledge and cogent arguments, he shows little inclination for belief. His arguments on ... ...9), yet that is exactly what Bloom does -- kiss her buttocks, the most anonymous and androgynous part of her body.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In fact, Molly's final thoughts in Ulysses only underscore the lack of eros that has afflicted Bloom throughout the book. She begins to menstruate ("this bloody pest of a thing" (p. 642)) even as she considers trying to re-establish sexual relations, and moves in her thoughts to their tryst on Howth Hill -- the same rendezvous Bloom has recalled so fondly before. Yet, like all too many of the happy occasions in Ulysses, this one is in the past, dead and gone. Indeed, the book ends in Molly's "yes I said yes I will Yes." (p. 644), but the "Yes" is in the past, only another sad comment on Bloom's lack of love. Love is a thing of the past, dreams are sick counterfeits and cheats: agape, storge, philia, eros, the four loves, are forlorn.

Perfect Competition

Perfect Competition In  economic theory,  perfect competition  describes markets such that no participants are large enough to have the  market power  to set the price of a homogeneous product. Because the conditions for perfect competition are strict, there are few if any perfectly competitive markets. Still, buyers and sellers in some  auction-type markets, say for  commodities  or some financial assets, may approximate the concept. Perfect competition serves as a benchmark against which to measure real-life and  imperfectly competitive  markets.Generally, a perfectly competitive market exists when every participant is a â€Å"price taker†, and no participant influences the price of the product it buys or sells. Specific characteristics may include: * Infinite buyers and sellers  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ An infinite number of consumers with the willingness and ability to buy the product at a certain price, and infinite producers with the willingness and ability to supp ly the product at a certain price. * Zero entry and exit barriers  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ A lack of entry and exit barriers makes it extremely easy to enter or exit a perfectly competitive market. Perfect factor mobility  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ In the long run  factors of production  are perfectly mobile, allowing free long term adjustments to changing market conditions. * Perfect information  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ All consumers and producers are assumed to have perfect knowledge of price, utility, quality and production methods of products. * Zero transaction costs  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ Buyers and sellers do not incur costs in making an exchange of goods in a perfectly competitive market. * Profit maximization  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ Firms are assumed to sell where marginal costs meet marginal revenue, where the most profit is generated. Homogenous products  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ The qualities and characteristics of a market good or service do not vary between different suppliers. * Non-increasing returns to scale  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ The lack of increa sing returns to scale (or economies of scale) ensures that there will always be a sufficient number of firms in the industry. * Property rights  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ Well defined property rights determine what may be sold, as well as what rights are conferred on the buyer. In the short run, perfectly-competitive markets are not  productively efficient  as output will not occur where marginal cost is equal to average cost (MC=AC).They are  allocatively efficient, as output will always occur where  marginal cost  is equal to  marginal revenue(MC=MR). In the long run, perfectly competitive markets are both allocatively and productively efficient. In perfect competition, any profit-maximizing producer faces a  market price  equal to its  marginal cost  (P=MC). This implies that a factor's price equals the factor's marginal revenue product. It allows for derivation of the supply curve on which the neoclassical approach is based. This is also the reason why â€Å"a monopoly doe s not have a supply curve†.The abandonment of price taking creates considerable difficulties for the demonstration of a general equilibrium except under other, very specific conditions such as that of monopolistic competition. By definition a perfectly competitive market is one in which no single firm has to influence either the equilibrium price of the market or the the total quantity supplied in the market. Thus, a firm operating in a competitive market has no incentive to supply at a price lower than market equilibrium price, as it can sell all it wants to supply at equilibrium. At the same time, the firm cannot sell at price higher than the market price, because it will be able find no buyers at that price, and its sales volume will drop down to zero. Thus, a firm operating in perfectly competitive market has to accept whatever is the market equilibrium price, and therefore it is called a price taker. In contrast, a monopoly firm is the only supplier in the market and there fore has full control over the market prices and total market supplies. Therefore, a firm operating in a monopoly market fixes its price in such a way that for the quantity demanded by customers at that market price the marginal revenue of the firm is equal to its marginal costs. In this way way it decides the market price as well as the total quantity if a commodity supplied in the market, and therefore it is called a price maker. Imperfect Competition In  economic theory,  imperfect competition  is the competitive situation in any market where the sellers in the market sell different/dissimilar of goods, (haterogenous) that does not meet the conditions of perfect competition.Forms of imperfect competition include: * Monopoly, in which there is only one seller of a good. * Oligopoly, in which there are few sellers of a good. * Monopolistic competition, in which there are many sellers producing highly differentiated goods. * Monopsony, in which there is only one buyer of a good . * Oligopsony, in which there are few buyers of a good. * Information asymmetry  when one competitor has the advantage of more or better information. There may also be imperfect competition due to a time lag in a market. An example is the â€Å"jobless recovery†.There are many growth opportunities available after a recession, but it takes time for employers to react, leading to high  unemployment. High unemployment decreases wages, which makes hiring more attractive, but it takes time for new jobs to be created. A type of  market that does not operate under the rigid rules of perfect competition. Perfect competition implies an industry or market in which no one supplier can influence prices, barriers to entry and exit are small, all suppliers offer the same goods, there are a large number of   suppliers and buyers, and information on pricing and process is readily available.Forms of imperfect competition include monopoly, oligopoly, monopolistic competition, monopson y and oligopsony. Pure Competition Pure Competition  is a market situation where there is a large number of independent sellers offering identical products. Pure competition is a term for an industry where competition isstagnant and relatively non competitive. Companies within the pure competition category have little control of price or distribution of product. Advertising, market research, and product development play a very little role in these companies/industries.A  market  characterized by a large  number  of independent  sellers  of standardized  products, free  flow  of information, and  free entry  and  exit. Each seller is a â€Å"price taker† rather than a â€Å"price maker†. Also sometimes referred to as  perfect competition,  pure  competition  is a situation in which the market for a product is populated with so many consumers and producers that no one entity has the ability to influence the price of the product sufficien tly to cause a fluctuation.Within this type of market setting, sellers are considered to be price takers, indicating that they are not in a position to set the price for their products outside a certain range, given the fact that so many other producers are active within the market. At the same time, consumers have little influence over the prices offered by the producers, since there is no singular group of consumers that dominates the demand. In reality,  pure  competition  is more  theory  than actual fact. While there are rare situations in which a marketplace functions with  pure  competition  for a short period of time, the situation normally shifts as various factors change the stalemate created by a multiplicity of sellers and buyers. This is often due to the somewhat stringent set of factors that must be present in order for the  competition  to be considered perfect or  pure. There are several essential characteristics that define  pure  competitio n. One has to do with the balance of buyers to sellers. When there is an infinite number of buyers who are willing to purchase the products offered for sale by an infinite number of producers, at a certain price, the opportunity for anyone to take actions that shift the market price is extremely limited. The price remains more or less the same, and the same number of buyers purchase the products from the same range of producers. With  pure  competition, sellers can easily exit or enter the marketplace, without creating any undue influence on the price. Consumers continue to make purchases at the same rate, even if two companies leave the market and only one new one enters. The collective producers who are still in the market simply continue to produce enough products to meet consumer demand, without a shift in market price. Businesses engaged in a  pure  competition  market usually structure production so that they incur marginal costs at a level where they can earn the most profit. When the product line is homogeneous, this means the products produced are essentially the same as the product line produced by other  suppliers  in the marketplace. Assuming the costs are in line withmarginal revenue, the business can generate a consistent profit for as long as the condition of  pure  competition  is present in the market.
